Why we started Mamu Beach

Two coaches, one gap in Miami, and a club built to close it.

Our story

A gap we kept seeing every season

After years coaching together at Westminster Christian School in Miami, we kept running into the same problem. Athletes who were serious about beach volleyball had nowhere local to train once the school season ended.

So in 2025 we built it. Mamu Beach is the first beach volleyball club in Miami-Dade County, running year round with coaching close enough that a coach can actually correct a platform mid-rally. Athletes pick the tournaments they want to play. Nobody needs to arrive with a partner.

We are a young club with a long coaching history behind it, and we would rather earn a family's second season than oversell the first.

Decades of coaching, before a single Mamu session

Sylvia Guso

Co-Director · Miami · LMU

Sylvia played four years of indoor volleyball at the University of Miami and finished her collegiate career with a fifth year of beach at Loyola Marymount. Back in Miami she became head coach of Westminster Christian's beach team, leading it to eight consecutive regional titles, a state championship, and two state runner-up finishes, with teams ranked as high as number one in Florida and nationally. She founded Mamu Beach, the first beach volleyball club in Miami-Dade County.

Julie Doan Kurenuma

Co-Director · FIU · Since 2005

Julie Doan Kurenuma played Division I indoor volleyball at FIU and has been coaching since 2005, at Westminster Christian and with Miami Elite. As director of Westminster's indoor program she won three state titles and thirteen district championships across fourteen seasons, with eleven Final Four appearances, and the team was recognized by MaxPreps as a National Dynasty Program. She has helped nearly one hundred athletes go on to play college volleyball.
